In the Vineyard
The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines are looking great and I expect to see the onset of veraison, or color and softening in the berries, any day. We have been spending many hours in the vineyard looking for pests like powdery mildew, mealy bugs, and leafhoppers and so far have been spared from any significant populations. Irrigation management has been on the top of the priority list too and I am very happy that our grapes have sufficient leaves to ripen the crop. A good balance between leaf and berry growth maximizes the quality of wines which result from the vintage. Our next focus will be bird control for which we net the vines and install car horns on the atv's we use around the vineyard to scare the birds and keep them in flight. Harvest looks to be delayed a few weeks at this point, but warm weather in the next month could get us caught up. Overall, the vines look healthy, the grapes look promising, and I am anticipating some amazing flavors in the grapes.
